Solar Prayers Answered at Norval United Church
Project Background
Norval United Church has long stood as a beacon of faith, community, and service in Georgetown, Ontario. With a commitment to stewardship not only in spiritual and social leadership but also in environmental responsibility, the church has taken a significant step towards sustainability. Guelph Solar was honoured to collaborate in the design and installation of a solar PV system.
This initiative supports the church’s values of sustainability, responsible resource use, and community leadership. By investing in clean and renewable solar energy, Norval United Church is reducing its environmental footprint, lowering energy costs, and inspiring other faith-based and community organizations to embrace green energy solutions

System Operation
This net-metered solar system powers Norval United Church during daylight hours, lowering electricity costs and reducing reliance on the grid. Surplus energy is sent back through a bi-directional meter, generating credits that help offset usage during cloudy winter months.
Real-time monitoring tracks energy production, equipment health, and overall performance, giving the church clear insights into both the financial and environmental benefits of going solar.

Financial Overview
Assumptions used for estimating system value:
• Utility Rate: $0.15/kWh
• Utility Rate Inflation: 2% per year over 25 years
• Annual Solar Output Degradation: 0.6%
• Year 1 Energy Generation: 65,760 kWh
• Inverter Replacement: One-time over system life
Based on these factors, payback is projected in year 12, with total lifetime savings estimated at $186,957.

Project Impact
The installation is expected to:
• Produce 65,760 kWh of clean electricity annually
• Offset approximately 25.9 metric tons of CO₂ each year
• Deliver the same environmental benefit as preserving 31 acres of forest
By going solar, Norval United Church is cutting costs while advancing its mission of sustainability and community leadership. The project demonstrates how faith-based organizations can set an example in embracing renewable energy and environmental stewardship.
