Guelph Solar designed, engineered and installed a 33 kW solar system that is 100% off-grid.

I'm Steve Dick, president of Guelph Solar. It used to be that you really needed the grid to come to your home so that you could have power. The grid isn't always available to bring hydro to a property.

Anton Lammers, designer engineer with Guelph Solar: We're completing a solar installation up in Muskokas. It's a 33 kilowatt solar array and 100 percent off grid. 

What we needed to do was set up a 3-phase system in order to increase the voltage and the stability of the network because all the subsequent buildings needed to have a very stable energy supply. 

The array itself is unique. We built it into the landscape. The architects, the designers, and the landscape architects wanted us to maintain the natural aesthetics of the land. By having the panels in that semicircle, we're minimizing the amount of trees that needed to be cut down for this.

And the batteries are amazing too. The batteries are lithium-ion batteries, and you're able to deplete those batteries down to 10-20% depth of discharge and all the way back up to 100% really quickly, really rapidly. So, those lithium-ion batteries are just far superior technology.

Guelph Solar can deliver solutions using battery technology, solar technology, great electronic technology, and the Internet. People can live out in nature and enjoy the beauty that we have here in Ontario, Canada, and live sustainably. This is part of the low carbon economy.
