MicroFIT: A Look Back at the System That Paid Homeowners to Go Solar

While the MicroFIT program is no longer available, it played a pivotal role in encouraging solar energy adoption in Ontario. At Guelph Solar, we worked with countless homeowners to install MicroFIT systems, guiding them through every step of this detailed process. Here’s an overview of how MicroFIT worked, preserved here for historical interest.

What Was the MicroFIT Program?

Launched by the Ontario Power Authority (now the Independent Electricity System Operator, or IESO), the MicroFIT program allowed homeowners to install small-scale solar systems and sell the electricity generated back to the grid at a guaranteed rate. It was a win-win for homeowners and clean energy advocates, incentivizing renewable energy adoption with a steady income stream for participants.

Though this program stopped accepting new applications in 2017, its impact on Ontario’s solar landscape is undeniable.

The MicroFIT Process: How It Worked

At Guelph Solar, we provided a turnkey service to ensure every MicroFIT project went smoothly. Here’s how the process unfolded:

1. Free Solar Assessment

Homeowners provided their address, and we assessed their roof via Google Earth. We estimated panel capacity, system costs, and potential returns on investment.

2. MicroFIT Application

We managed all aspects of the application with the IESO, which included:

  • Obtaining homeowner consent to act on their behalf.

  • Gathering additional details through a "Getting Started" form.

  • Submitting a copy of the homeowner’s hydro bill.

Our team ensured the application was complete and accurate, even visiting the Land Registry Office to confirm property details.

3. Local Hydro Company Approval

If the IESO issued a "Conditional Offer," we submitted a "Connection Application" to the local hydro provider. This determined the feasibility of connecting the system to the grid.

Moving to Installation

4. Site Assessment and Proposal

We conducted an on-site evaluation to confirm system viability and presented a detailed proposal to the homeowner.

5. Permits and Setup

Guelph Solar handled building permits and utility account setup, ensuring compliance with all regulations.

6. Installation and Inspections

Our in-house team installed the solar panels, racking, and inverter. Licensed electricians completed the wiring, and inspectors from the Electrical Safety Authority and the local municipality signed off on the system.

7. Energy Production Begins

Once the system was connected to the grid, homeowners began generating clean energy and receiving payments for electricity produced.

The Legacy of MicroFIT

Although new MicroFIT projects are no longer available, this program laid the foundation for the widespread adoption of solar power in Ontario. Today, systems like net metering continue this legacy, allowing homeowners to offset their electricity bills with the solar power they generate. Unlike MicroFIT, net metering ties benefits directly to the property, making it easier to migrate when selling a home.
